How to Prevent Stretch Marks During Pregnancy


When I found out I was pregnant with my first baby (Lyric), my immediate thought was "I can't get stretch marks!" I was so concerned that my body was changing and I would never be the "same" again, that I forgot to sit back and enjoy the little things. I would wake up in the morning, check my skin, lather on as much lotion and oils as I could and check it again before I went to bed. It really just makes me laugh to think back on how crazy I was. After all I went through with giving birth and raising Lyric I realized the MOST important thing is that you and your baby are healthy. THAT'S IT. Having perfectly smooth skin or a flat stomach is just an image we want to portray; that we just gave birth to a baby and we look as if we didn't. It's okay to show pregnancy, its okay to show motherhood and its most definitely okay to show the marks that you were given from creating and growing life. I guess what I'm trying to say is, don't be to hard on yourself for not having the perfectly round, stretch mark free belly you always see in pictures.


Although you don't have to be obsessed with your pregnant belly like I was, It's still very important to take care of your skin and moisturize it daily, especially during pregnancy. I spent so much time researching the best products to use during my first pregnancy, that I feel like I'm a pro now. I've had many trial and errors with different products but I found some that take all the guessing away for you! I'm also including a few tips that help decrease the chances of stretch marks while pregnant. Keep in mind, the majority of stretch marks has to do with your genetics, but you can definitely help decrease the chances of them.


Before I get into my every day belly care routine, I wanted to let you know a little bit about this specific product and brand. I first heard about Mama Mio during my first pregnancy with my son Lyric. I was doing A TON of research on the best products to prevent stretch marks. I was so over the typical lotions that absorbed through my skin within the first 5 minutes that I knew I needed something stronger to allow my skin the proper foundation for stretching. 1. Tummy Rub Scrub

I use The Tummy Rub Scrub about twice A week. I apply a small drop on my hand and rub in a gentle circular motion while in the shower. This exfoliator has natural pumice, volcanic lava and bamboo extract to buff away dryness while leaving your skin silky smooth and instantly hydrated. I noticed it actually feels REALLY good on my itchy belly, so I look forward to using this every week.

I use this during the day because it doesn't stain my clothes and it leaves a cooling feel to my itchy skin.

3. The Tummy Rub Oil

After using the full range pregnancy skin care line from Mama Mio, I really fell in love with their Tummy Rub Oil. I'm a HUGE oil lover when it comes to my pregnant belly, especially at night when my skin feels the driest. Well, before using this I was using regular coconut oil. I would find myself waking up in the middle of the night with an itchy dry belly and waking my husband up just to reapply every few hours. I was getting really frustrated. I started using this and I will say, a little goes a long way. I do one squirt of the oil, rub it all over my belly and hips and my skin stays so hydrated and itch free ALL NIGHT LONG! DO NOT ITCH: As your belly continues to stretch you'll feel the urge to itch all over your belly and boobs. The best way I can describe the feeling is when you have a sunburn that is in the healing process, and itches like crazy! DON'T DO IT! If you itch with your nails or fingers, you will cause your skin to seperate causing a stretch mark. Instead take your hand and gently rub around in soft gentle motions to alleviate the itching sensation. If you feel it itching a lot apply your oils to hydrate your skin.


STAY OUT OF SUN: My first pregnancy was during the summer time, which was great (give me all the stretchy dresses!) However, the sun during pregnancy is not your best friend, especially on your growing belly. The sun sucks all the moisture out of your skin leaving it dry, which in return will cause stretch marks. Then, if you happen to get sunburnt, you will have even more skin dehydration and get more itchy-ness! If I went in the sun, I would put a towel over my belly or lather up in sunscreen.


DRINK PLENTY OF WATER: It's no secret that if your pregnant you are required to drink a crap ton of water. Not only to keep you hydrated internally but also to keep your skin hydrated. It's so crazy how everything plays a huge role and ties into each other. The more water you drink the less likely you are to get stretch marks.


LATHER UP ON OILS & LOTIONS: By using any of the above products in a daily routine I can promise your skin will alway feel hydrated and soft. It doesn't mean it will prevent them 100% because your genetics play a huge role in that, but it will definitely help your skin and the stretching properties.
